Asbestos awards should be brought in line with Scottish law |
“This consultation gives the government another opportunity to look again at compensation for bereavement,” he said. “We believe strongly that there is a powerful case for a change in the law to bring compensation for bereavement into line with the amounts currently paid in Scotland.” Original Article: Legal and Medical Our Source: Claims Standards Council Weekly Bulletin 10/08/07 |

10/08/2007 The government should bring the amount of compensation awarded to bereaved families of mesothelioma victims in England & Wales, in line with payments made in Scotland, solicitors have argued. The demands are in response to a Ministry of Justice consultation aimed at improving the system for dealing with claims for compensation for personal injuries and death. In Scotland, payments of up to £30,000 have been made to bereaved widows and other family members can receive between £10,000 and £15,000 each. However, in England and Wales the level of compensation is set at £10,000 by law and is only payable to the spouse. Ian McFall, Head of asbestos policy at Thompsons Solicitors, believes there needs to be equality for families affected by asbestos. |
