Asbestos awards should be brought in line with Scottish law

10/08/2007

The government should bring the amount of compensation awarded to bereaved families of mesothelioma victims in England & Wales, in line with payments made in Scotland, solicitors have argued.

The demands are in response to a Ministry of Justice consultation aimed at improving the system for dealing with claims for compensation for personal injuries and death.

In Scotland, payments of up to £30,000 have been made to bereaved widows and other family members can receive between £10,000 and £15,000 each. However, in England and Wales the level of compensation is set at £10,000 by law and is only payable to the spouse.

Ian McFall, Head of asbestos policy at Thompsons Solicitors, believes there needs to be equality for families affected by asbestos.
